Have you ever found yourself taking hours to figure what to write in your Instagram caption only to end up writing a vague sentence like, “Morning gram?”🤦♂️
We’ve all been there. After creating the content, editing photo’s and finding the right hashtags, you now sit with your phone in hand trying to decide what to add to that blank little box staring back at you. The struggle.
Well, the struggle ends here. Today I’ll be showing you how to write converting Instagram captions that help you build your brand as well and hand over some ideas you could use for your next post.
What makes a great Instagram Caption?
A great Instagram caption consists of one topic, a clear brand voice, a strong headline, a convincing story, and a strong Call to Action. Combining all these elements ensures that you connect with your audience but also convert them. This leads to becoming loyal fans and eventually paying customers.
1) The topic
For each post, decide on one topic to write about. Focusing on various topics in one caption can get confusing. By sticking to one you can ensure that your message gets across. Use the image you want to post as a guide as to what you want to write about. Let it guide your caption in the right direction.
2) Your brand voice
You have a personality and a voice. So does your brand. Discovering your brand voice starts with knowing what your voice tempo is. Do you speak in long sentences, or have a tendency to use quick, jabbing quips? Do you speak fast or slowly? Do you speak softly or really loudly? Begin by identifying what your brand voice sounds like.
Next, what terminology do you use often in your day-to-day life? What terminology does your audience use? By combining these two you merge your world with that of your audience.
Lastly, specify your tone of voice. This can be cheerful, intellectual, patriotic, smooth and cool, formal, relaxed, happy, flirty…the list goes on.
3) The Headline
Create a killer hook. People are constantly scrolling on Instagram. Let the first line in your caption make them stop. Make it so curiosity-driven that they will pause to read more. Remember, the longer someone stays and interacts with your post, the more the algorithm favors your posts and account.
Here are some scroll-stopping caption headlines for you!
- Please tell me I’m not the only one who…
- I probably should have listened to my mom when she told me…
- Is it too early to be excited about…
- I can’t believe this just happened!
- I never imagined this dream of mine would become a reality!
- Today did not turn out the way I had expected it to.
- I messed up…
4) The body
Now share your story. Don’t be afraid to use descriptive words and go into detail. Remember to add spacing, line breaks, emojis, and bullet points. This makes it easier for your audience to read.
5) Call to Action
End it dramatically with a strong Call to Action. This is where you ask your reader to do something: click the link in bio, tag a friend, comment, etc. Varying up your CTA is essential because you’re nurturing a relationship, and you would never ask your friend to do the same thing every time you spoke with him/her, so you shouldn’t do that to your audience either.
Here are some powerful Call to Actions for you!
- Who else…
- What’s your thoughts on…
- Tag someone who would like this.
- Head over to the link in my bio for…
- Which one is your favourite?

What to write about
If you’ve ever found yourself ready to post something but not sure what to write in the caption, then I’m here to help. Here’s a list of topic ideas you can use for your next post.
1) Share your story
Stories connect. Share about your day. Something that you saw or experienced. Share how you got started in your industry. Or your journey up to where you are now. Share about something you’ve learned recently or a fear you overcame. You have an entire life riddled with stories. Share this with people.
2) Promote your offer
Instagram is the perfect place to promote your new song, album, book, course, or product. People are on Instagram to consume content and with the new updates, Instagram is becoming more and more of a shopping platform as well. People are constantly looking for deals, sales, things that will bring entertainment, and offers that will make their lives easier. Use this to your advantage.
You have the knowledge to educate people with the things you know. If you are in the music industry, share lessons you’ve learned and tips to do x,y, and z. If you know how to do something well, teach others how to do it. If you’re seeing certain results in your industry, help others to get those same results.
People love to be inspired and discover new things on Instagram. Know about an app that has made your life easier? Share it! Know how to put together amazing outfits? Post it. Love writing songs or poetry? Let others see it. Have a recipe that’s changed your life? Share it.
5) Be relatable
People connect with those they can relate with. Share mistakes you’ve made and what you’ve learned from them. Write about lessons you’ve learned throughout life. Don’t be afraid to talk about your own life struggles, emotions, and hard days. You are a human being. People connect with other human beings.
6) Suprise them
Do the unexpected. Release a new song. Do a giveaway. Host a live video with someone in your audience. By keeping them on their toes they’ll be sure to turn on their notifications and anticipate your next post!
Your Instagram caption is a valuable tool to connect with your audience in a deeper way. It’s the handshake that leads to a friendship or partnership. Use this to your advantage by giving each caption a goal and allow your words to achieve that goal.
